Department of Critical Care

The purpose of a Critical Care Unit is to look after patients who are critically ill. There are two levels of Critical Care: Level 3 (L3) corresponding to the older term "Intensive Care" and Level 2 (L2) corresponding to "High Dependency Care". The Department of Critical Care at DRI provides care at both these levels. Critical Care Units are staffed by specially-trained doctors and nurses, who are supported by a wide range of other specialists.

The Department of Critical Care at Doncaster Royal Infirmary can care for up to twenty two patients at a time, with facility for up to ten L3 patients and twelve L2. The Critical Care Unit at Bassetlaw Hospital has facilities to look after up to four L3 patients and three L2 patients at a time.

Both hospitals are part of the North Trent Critical Care Network that was set up to co-ordinate activities and share experiences and guidelines between the Intensive Care Units in North Trent.

It is important to identify and treat critically-ill patients as early as possible in their illness. Both hospitals have set up Critical Care Outreach Teams to help ensure that patients are identified, treated, and, if required, admitted to a critical care unit in a timely manner.

Staff in both Intensive Care Units follow up patients who have been discharged to a general ward. The follow up ensures that patients' and relatives' experiences can be used to improve the services that we offer. Bassetlaw Hospital is currently piloting a long-term follow-up clinic for patients when they have been discharged home.
