Pain Management

The Chronic Pain Management Services are for people who are experiencing pain for a wide variety of reasons, ranging from a bad back through to cancer. If the pain is hard to treat for whatever reason, then patients may be referred to the service by their GP.

The service extends across three sites:

  • Bassetlaw Hospital
  • Montagu Hospital, Mexborough
  • Barnsley District General Hospital

and sees over a thousand new patients each year. Most patients will be seen and treated at the site nearest to their home or work, but may sometimes have to travel to the Pain Management Unit at Montagu Hospital for a specific treatment. Patients may sometimes be asked to travel if they can be seen quicker that way.

The service is run by a mixed group of professionals with expertise in the treatment and management of pain. They include:

Doctors
Nurses
Psychologists
Physiotherapists
Chaplain

A Doctor or a Physiotherapy Practitioner assesses all patients initially, but any patient may see as many of the team members as we think they can benefit from.

Many of our patients have some pain that cannot be cured, but we will do everything possible to relieve it and will help people to cope with what we can't get rid of, so that their quality of life is as good as we can get it.

What we do guarantee is that everyone is listened to and treated as an individual.
