Doncaster & Bassetlaw Hospitals have received a Top 40 Hospitals Award for the seventh year running. The award winners were announced at a ceremony in Birmingham on Monday 14 May.
Chief Executive, Nigel Clifton, congratulated staff on this outstanding achievement: “Every year it gets harder to meet the rigorous standards for this award. So my thanks go to our staff. The award comes after a busy year when we have also had to watch our expenditure and implement national pay schemes. Recognition as a Top 40 hospital is a real boost for the year ahead.”
The Top 40 Hospitals Award is presented annually by CHKS, an independent provider of comparative healthcare information to NHS Trusts and the independent healthcare sector. It is based on the results of 20 performance indicators ranging from mortality and readmissions rates to waiting times and the results of the national
staff survey. (See Notes to editors for the full list).
Figures released by CHKS show that patients treated at any of the CHKS 40 Top Hospitals are safer and less likely to pick up hospital-associated infections such as MRSA.
CHKS also examined the number of actual deaths versus the expected number of deaths for each hospital and discovered that, although overall mortality rates are falling across most hospitals, on average there were 297 fewer deaths than expected at each of the 40 Top Hospitals compared to 73 fewer deaths than expected for those outside this group.
The analysis also found that there were 12% fewer MRSA infections within the CHKS Top 40 and that the use of beds was more efficient.
